Hungary retains cheapest electricity in EU

Retail gas prices fell slightly, while electricity prices in European Union (EU) member states rose slightly in the first half of this year compared to a year earlier, while Hungary had the cheapest electricity, according to data from EU statistical agency Eurostat.

EU residents paid EUR 21.9 per 100 kilowatt hours for electricity between January-June, EUR 0.60 more than a year earlier.

Natural gas cost EUR 6.4 per 100 kilowatt hours on average in the EU, EUR 0.10 less than in the first half of 2020. Expressed in euros, the average electricity price in Hungary was the lowest in the first half of this year, at EUR 10 per 100 kilowatt hours.

Natural gas was the cheapest in Lithuania, costing EUR 2.8 per 100 kilowatt hours,

Latvia was second with EUR 3 and Hungary third with EUR 3.1.
