Hungary Rolls out Stricter Honey Blend Labeling Rules

Hungary's Agriculture Ministry has amended regulations to require countries of origin to be listed on honey blend labels, Agriculture Minister István Nagy said on Thursday, according to a report by state news wire MTI.
Countries of origin must be listed in order of proportions in the honey blend under the modifications in force from August 11.
The measure was taken because of the "slow pace" at which the European Union is addressing the issue, Nagy said.
At present, honey blend labels must indicate only whether the honey is from countries inside or outside of the EU, allowing producers to "cover up" the real origin of their honey, he added.
He noted that Hungary had joined a majority of other EU member states to press for tighter EU rules on honey blend labeling in January.
Honey blends that do not comply with the new Hungarian labeling requirements will be allowed on shelves until their sell-by dates for a six-month transitional period.
